There are only five identified Blue Zones in the world, and in the course of twelve months we have stumbled onto two of them. The first was Sardinia, last fall. Now we have reached the Greek island of Ikaria, where many of the people enjoy good health past the age of 90, with quite a few living to be 100 years old. We have enjoyed walking around the beautiful town of Agios Kyrikos and trying to puzzle out the secrets of the people here. Right away we discovered a bakery with a wood-fired oven that produced the most amazing cinnamon rolls, so we immediately bought some for second breakfast, bringing a feeling of well-being right away. Then we walked by the waterfront and noticed a lot of people sitting at café tables under shady trees and talking for hours. The town was also home a lot of park benches, so we tried out one to embrace the non-hurrying vibe for a while. We have since learned that people on Ikaria take a nap every day; there’s a habit one could get used to.

Here is a short video about Ikaria’s Blue Zone-ness that we enjoyed:
And here is the picture I took in morning light as we left Agios Kyrikos and Ikaria, which we had so quickly grown to love:
