Salve, Italia!

In yet another first, we made our first overnight crossing unassisted. I won’t lie to you–not everything went swimmingly in those 28 hours, but we worked out each challenge as it came. We were aided by calm seas and favorable winds: a good backdrop for us to figure out the many, many things that will become routine in time: predeparture lists, raising anchor, plotting a course, setting the sails, responding to the conditions, monitoring systems, watching and communicating with other traffic, troubleshooting alarms, taking watch, securing moorage, Med mooring (this is where I lose sleep), etc. We have a long way to go, but we made it and are now two very tired souls. Not too tired, though, to seek gelato and dinner in Alghero, Sardinia, where we landed. We did this right after I changed our courtesy flag from that of Spain to the Italian tricolor. This small act felt momentous in the moment. Bueno, in fact.
