4 Easy Steps to Prepare for Greece

In anticipation of spending several months sailing in Greece, it seemed right to prepare with intentionality. Here is the regimen we followed:

  1. Study Greek language for 105 days. Greek is HARD! All those new letters, some of which do not sound like what you think they should. And no Latin roots to recognize. Lots of work, and we’ll be lucky if we can find the bathroom in a public place. John gets an A+ for this effort because DuoLingo is an addictive video game.

2. Savour olives. Shockingly, neither of us cares for olives. But in recent months we resolved to try to get over disliking them by forcing ourselves to eat them. John is doing much better at this than I am, as I’m still no fan of their weird texture or briny taste.

3. Embrace all things blue and white. Okay, finally one I’ve aced. When we were married in 1980, we were supposed to behave and choose earth-toned dishes like everyone else. I rebelled and chose white stoneware with a blue rim. Love, love, love it. Can’t wait to gaze at all things Greek.

4. Watch Mamma Mia! As of May 2025, only 174 Americans had never seen this movie, and we were two of them, so we watched it on the plane on the way over. What’s not to love: the scenery, the joie de vivre, the actors doing their own singing! It took weeks to dislodge all those Abba earworms from my head!

Check, check, check, check, Okay Greece, here we come!
