I’ll Have What She’s Having

Recently we spotted a few bait balls on our way, offshore of the toe of Italy’s boot. We are clued in by the sight of a lot of excited birds touching down to the surface, and intermittent splashes where tuna or other large fish are jumping. But wait, gulls can’t eat big fish like tuna; what gives? The center of all the excitement is a school of small fish such as sardines, that are attracting the large fish. When the larger fish break the surface, they alert the birds to the presence of the smaller fish, and the feeding frenzy begins as the gulls belly up to the sardine buffet.
