Oh, my. So much drama when last we heard from Quintessa. In some quarters, “The Tale of Captain Kate and the Rescue of John’s Thumb” has reached mythic proportions: John’s arm had to be reattached, didn’t it? Well, I heard Kate navigated through 30-foot seas! Just kidding. Let’s just say there was enough trauma that it was good to return to terra firma and family for recovery. John’s thumb came through well, and although it does not have full functionality, it has been cleared for careful sailing, and we are ready to return to cruising.
Meanwhile, no time was wasted; we spent four months packed with people and appointments, divine and otherwise. The time spent with seven “kids” (3 of them kids-in-law) and seven grandkids was a gift. We learned that grandchild Number 8 is due to arrive in August. Among other things, we celebrated the life of a departed friend, walked on a Pacific beach, voted in an American election, butchered a deer in Montana, attended a school play, awaited and celebrated the birth of Jesus, sailed in Florida, attending a sweet wedding, hiked in Central Oregon, crewed in Sunday sailing races on the Columbia River, drove little girls to ballet, dined weekly with Kate’s 95-year-old mother, played with our rambunctious grandpuppy, helped pull off a surprise birthday party, finished shutting down John’s business, and shared God and life with our community group. John’s sister and brother-in-law, saints both, tolerated us in their home the whole time and put up with our comings and goings: grazie mille, Joyce and Kevin!
Time to get our heads back in the game: there is a lot to do to get Quintessa ready to sail while taking some time to look around a beautiful Sardinia and enjoy the place and its people.
