The America’s Cup is a sailing competition and the oldest international competition still operating in any sport. America’s Cup match races are held between two sailing yachts: one from the yacht club that currently holds the trophy and the other from the yacht club that is challenging for the cup. John and I are taking ownership of our new boat in the harbor that is ground zero for the 37th America’s Cup competition. Pictured above is a huge tent that is literally at the top of our dock. The actual races are only about 1 kilometer from the tent, but viewers can get a big-screen view plus statistics and commentary by watching together in the tent. Thousands of spectators line the nearby beach to watch, and some watch from sailboats and superyachts. We can watch the boats depart from where we are docked, and see the base for each country’s team.
The US will not be taking home the cup this year, as American Magic lost to Luna Rossa (the Italian team) last week. Either Luna Rossa or Ineos Brittania will compete against the New Zealand boat for the cup in a couple of weeks. We will not be here for the final match, as today we will leave Barcelona for new shores.
